Baltimore mom Carmen DeBerry earned her commercial driver’s license through the Community College of Baltimore County after receiving a scholarship that covered her training. She later found out the scholarship came from All Within My Hands, the charitable foundation created by the band Metallica. The support helped her step into a steady career that allows her to care for her daughter and her mother.
Metallica frontman James Hetfield says not everyone is built for college, a belief shaped in part by his own upbringing as the son of a truck driver. The band’s foundation started with small acts of giving and has grown to assist food banks, disaster relief, and workforce programs. They’ve donated more than $10-million to education and often help quietly during emergencies.
Metallica’s annual All Within My Hands benefit concert draws major support from fans and raises millions. Hetfield recently met DeBerry backstage at a Maryland show, where she told him that mentioning the Metallica funded scholarship helped during her job interview. Hetfield says hearing her story makes the band’s purpose feel even clearer.
