An old fashion trend is making a comeback, thanks to Gen Z women. “Man Repeller” outfits are back in a big way on social media and in fashion culture. So, what are those exactly? Man Repeller outfits are basically put together to avoid unwanted male attention and feature items not considered traditionally attractive to the fellas.
The term isn’t new, it was first coined by Laura Mulvey in 1975, and the young women of today are putting their own spin on it.
- Man Repeller outfits often include baggy silhouettes, long skirts and things like big bulky glasses.
- A recent Instagram from Style Analytics used data analysis to dredge through the comments sections on Reddit threads about clothing items men “hate” to find the most mentioned items, which include oversized sunglasses, pointy-toed shoes, high-waisted trousers or jeans and baggy clothing.
- Designers are helping to push the revival of the Man Repeller trend, with popular brands like Prada and Miu Miu featuring those looks on the runway.
And when men make it clear online which women’s clothes they don’t like, women following the trend embrace wearing them even more. An Instagram Reel from Daphne Blunt that’s been viewed 2.2-million times is a perfect example. In it, she’s showing off her lacy corset dress and tiara, and the text overlay reads “today a MAN said he didn’t like my outfit which means it must be a really incredibly cute outfit.”
