A prominent obesity campaigner in the UK is calling for workers to have their waistlines measured yearly by employers, similar to Japan's “metabo” law which has been measuring waist sizes since 2008 in an attempt to overcome obesity rates.

Why do this? A new study found overweight and obese employees are significantly more likely to take sick leave. While unpopular initially, campaigner Tam Fry argues these measures are necessary, comparing them to seatbelt laws. Fry believes a British “metabo” law, while not a quick fix, could be effective, despite its potential unpopularity.
