Stress from the coronavirus pandemic is forcing at least one German zoo to go to extreme lengths to stay afloat.
The BBC reports that Neumunster Zoo has formulated a plan to slaughter certain animals in order to cut costs and feed others housed there.
Zoo officials say they are struggling with no visitors and cannot shutdown completely because animals need to eat and enclosures must have maintenance.
Neumunster estimates losses of 200-thousand dollars after the spring, especially without help from the government.
Several animal sanctuaries have urged German Chancellor Angela Merkel for 100-million euros as a relief package.
