Longtime MSNBC host Chris Matthews is stepping down. The Hardball host announced his retirement Monday night.
It comes after a series of criticisms over his comments about Bernie Sanders and remarks he made to female coworkers.
The 74-year-old noted that it's clear that compliments about women's appearances that many people, including himself, thought were okay, were never acceptable.
Matthews hosted Hardball on MSNBC since 1999. He was once a speech writer for former President Jimmy Carter.
