Heretic Coffee Co., a volunteer-run nonprofit café in Southeast Portland, has raised over $180,000 to help feed people losing SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown.

They started collecting donations less than a week ago to support breakfast services for affected community members.

On Tuesday morning, the café reported that they’d received more than $72,000 in donations, and then the total increased to over $180,000 by Wednesday, with funds coming from more than 2,000 contributors. The coffee shop has been sharing updates on social media, noting the significant response from supporters.

Owner Josh White says the donations show how community members step in when support systems fall short. He expressed appreciation for the number of people who contributed to the effort. The café plans to use the funds to continue providing meals to those in need, no questions asked.
