Last month, 15-year-old Summer Hinote was attacked by a 10-foot alligator while swimming in Pond Creek, Florida. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office says the alligator bit her leg and dragged her underwater. The quick-thinking teen started punching the alligator in the head, which caused it to let go briefly before grabbing her again and shaking her violently.
Hinote says she felt the animal brush against her just before it attacked. She managed to escape and run out of the water after the gator loosened its grip. With help from her friend, she was able to get to safety.
She was hospitalized with severe leg injuries, fortunately, doctors say her leg didn’t need to be amputated. A photo of the teen after the incident shows her recovering in the hospital, smiling and flashing a peace sign next to her mother and doctor.
