A pair of neighbors in Amherst, New Hampshire, saved a woman from a house fire on Friday night. Artem Kozlov saw flames coming from the woman’s trailer home and knew she lived alone and couldn’t walk. He rushed to get his neighbor, Tom Hansis, who’s lived across the street from the home for three decades. Together, they quickly ran into her home, found her sitting in the living room unaware of the fire, and carried her out to safety.

The Amherst Fire Department confirms the woman was already outside when they arrived. When Hansis learned the woman’s cats were still inside, he bravely re-entered the home, but unfortunately, the animals didn’t make it out.

Kozlov, who’s only lived in the U.S. for three years, was impressed with the community response to the incident, saying he admires people’s kindness and support. For his part, Hansis humbly says he doesn’t see his actions as heroic, that he simply did what he hoped someone would do for his own family.
