Canton School District Proposes Lowering GPA For Student Athletes

Parents in the Canton City School District are conflicted over a new proposal to lower the academic threshold for allowing students to participate in school athletics.

The policy now is that a student must have at least a 2.0 GPA, or a "C" average, to participate in school athletics.

Under the new proposal, a student would need a 1.5 GPA, or a "D" average to play.

Students with a one-point-five GPA would be required to attend study groups until the average rose to a 2.0.

The district plans to present the idea to the school board next week.
