Alejandro Villanueva is finally speaking out on why he chose to put Alwyn Cashe's name on the back of his helmet before Week One's game instead of Antwon Rose Junior's, as the team had agreed.
The former Army Ranger and West Point graduate told reporters in a video conference Monday that his decision was a part of a push to get Cashe the Medal of Freedom.
He said head coach Mike Tomlin gave him permission to do as much.
The move faced a lot of scrutiny publicly, specifically from Rose's mother, who said she had been told the entire team agreed to put her son's name on the back of their helmets.
Rose was killed by police in East Pittsburgh.
