The Chicks Wanted To Change Their “Stupid” Name For Years

The Chicks recently dropped the "Dixie" from their name, and in a new interview with the “New York Times” the trio reveals the change is something they’ve been wanting to do for a while.

“We were literally teenagers when we picked that stupid name,” Martie Maguire, shared, noting it was chosen in 1989, before Natalie Maines joined the group. “We wanted to change it years and years and years ago,” Natalie, added, “I just wanted to separate myself from people that wave that Dixie flag.”

Emily Strayer noted that they finally made the move after she saw a a Confederate flag on Instagram, which someone labeled “the Dixie Swastika,” explaining, “I don’t want to have anything to do with that.”

The Chicks also talk about their 2016 appearance at the CMA Awards with Beyonce, the last time they did anything related to the mainstream country music industry. They noted that there was a lot of backlash about having Bey on the show, with some of the comments from viewers being racial. “They treated us very weird backstage,” Natalie said of the appearance, adding about the nasty comments, “For them to disrespect (Beyoncé) that way was disgusting.”
