Cleveland Indians Manager Terry Francona Voices Support For New Team Name

Only a few days after the Cleveland Indians said they would begin reviewing a possible name change, team manager Terry Francona is offering support.

Francona spoke on Sunday during a Zoom call and said he felt it was time for the Indians to move forward and change the name many people find is racially insensitive to Native Americans.

Founded in 1900 as the Cleveland Lake Shores, the team was also known as the Bluebirds, Blues, Broncos, and Napoleons or Naps before settling on Indians in 1915.

At the end of 2018, the team removed the Chief Wahoo mascot from its on-field uniforms but not from other merchandise available at team shops.
