Willoughby High School Drops Rebel Mascot

A suburban Cleveland high school is saying goodbye to its mascot in light of the recent Confederate statue controversies.

The Willoughby South High School Rebel mascot features a man dressed in a gray military outfit, which is the color of Confederate uniforms in the Civil War.

The rebel flag was also part of the school, but that was barred years ago, though the name and mascot stayed.  School officials announced yesterday the mascot will be removed in light of the deadly attack during protests in Charlottesville, Virginia and some cities deciding to remove Confederate statues.

School leaders say the hope this move enhances the environment for students.  The district will also seek input from students, staff and the community to identify a new mascot.
