A nearly century old Confederate statue was pulled down by protesters at a North Carolina rally against racism. Protesters used a ladder and rope to pull down the 1924 bronze Confederate Soldiers Monument, which is of a soldier holding a rifle, and sits in front of an old courthouse building. They then began kicking the statue.
The protest was in response to this weekend’s white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, but some think what the North Carolina protestors did was too much. Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tweeted, "The racism and deadly violence in Charlottesville is unacceptable but there is a better way to remove these monuments."
Meanwhile most local officials have decided not to criticize the protestors’ actions. “Our elected officials and senior staff understand the unrest in our nation and community” after last weekend’s white power rally and terror attack in Charlottesville, VA,” Durham County’s public information office said. “We share the sentiments of many communities around the nation that admonish hate and acts of violence as we believe civility is necessary in our every action and response.”
