The BIG3 League played its first games on Sunday, and considering 15,000 plus fans, and the handful of celebs that showed up at the Barclays for the event, it was a huge success.
Of course, there were some bumps and bruises along the way as both Jason Williams and Corey Maggette suffered injuries.
But given how long it’s been since these guys played at that level, it‘s actually surprising there were only two injuries.
Still when Ice Cube was recently asked about why he created the league he said it was an idea that lingered in the back of his mind for a while.
“When I saw Kobe score 60 points in his last game I knew that that guys can still play basketball. That guy that I’d still pay to watch him to play basketball and there's now where that I can ever see him play again at this level. And that's a shame. And I'm tired of it. I saw it happen with Dr. J. I saw it happen with Magic Johnson, Kareem Bird. Michael Jordan. Kobe. Shaq. And I'm fed up,” he offered. “I wanted to bring something about where guys could still play if they wanted to, [and] we can still pay to see them play if they want to.”
Cube went on to say it was just a no brainer from there because he felt a lot of people out there were like him and would go pay to exactly that.
And it sure looks like he’s right.
