Ohio City Councilman Asks If They Can Stop Overdose 911 Responses

A City Council member in Middletown, Ohio is bringing up the idea of emergency services not responding to overdose calls.

Dan Picard brought up the suggestion yesterday, citing the city's spending of 100-thousand-dollars on Narcan, ten times the budgeted amount. The fire chief fired back that the department has moral and legal obligations to help people with medical needs. He also said cutting off Narcan would not end the opioid epidemic.

Picard also suggested offsetting the cost of Narcan by requiring community service from overdose victims revived by Narcan. According to the councilman, overdoses have far exceeded the 2016 rate in just six months and that death rates from opioid overdoses are expected to be at levels not seen before.
