The ritual has been the same for generations. You're headed down to Cape Cod for some fun in the sun and about 6 miles out, traffic stops. You slowly grind towards the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges. You can see them in the distance, but it seems to take forever to get over them. "Are we there yet?"
Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which currently owns and maintains these 85-year-old targets of our swears, announced a partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for a multi-year project to demolish these bridges and replace them with gleaming new ones which will handle traffic flow much better.
The federal government will cover the costs of the project, estimated to be around $1.6 billion, then turn maintenance over to MassDOT. No timetable for completion was given, but how much more do you think this will cost in the end? Now when have we heard them say this will ease traffic congestion before...
