After a fire burned Bret Harte Elementary School in Modesto, California, retired teacher Julie Nelson wanted to do something to help. The fire destroyed classrooms, a computer lab, and the library, so she decided to collect books to replace the ones that were burned.
"I'd like to collect hardback donated books for Bret Harte Elementary message me and please share," Nelson posted on Facebook. And donations started pouring in. In just one day, she’d collected 150 books.
"The little gestures of a lot of people adds up to make a huge difference in the community," she says. "I just hope it makes a difference and that the kids will enjoy it.”
