A group of students from Catholic Memorial High School in Massachusetts honored a homeless veteran by attending his funeral and carrying his casket, even though they had never met the man. U.S. Army veteran John T. Fitzmaurice had no friends or family when he passed away, so the students stood in for his loved ones.
The all-boys private school now works with the Lazarus Ministry and a local funeral home to provide funerals for the homeless, the poor, and people who die alone with no family. This was the first service the students had been a part of.
"They were moved by the honor of standing in for this man who had no family,” explains school spokesman Marcus Miller. “It was a lesson in honoring every person's humanity.”
