#GoodNews: Dog Saves Owners From Sinking Mud When Firefighters Can’t

As pet owners, it’s our job to take care of our animals, but Otis the chocolate lab got to return the favor for his owner recently. The one-year-old pooch helped pull his owner, Jake Atkins, and his friend out of sinking mud they got stuck in while duck hunting near Perry Lake, Kansas.

Atkins and his buddy were out hunting when they got stuck knee deep in mud, and after trying to wiggle free, they only made it worse and ended up waist deep. The hunters were able to call 911, but firefighters determined they couldn’t get out to get a rope to them without sinking themselves.

So Otis was the dog for the job. Firefighters tied rope to him and it took him three trips to get the men and all their gear out. Even though he had no rescue training, he got the job done. Now Atkins says he’s rewarding Otis with a steak dinner for saving them.
