#GoodNews: Blind Man Will Run NYC Marathon With Help From App He Created

This weekend is the New York City Marathon and Simon Wheatcroft will be there running along with thousands of other gluttons for punishment. But he’s got a few extra things to deal with as he hits the pavement for 26.2 miles: he’s legally blind and will be running on his own.

But Wheatcroft will have some assistance from an app called Wayband, which he helped develop. It uses GPS technology to send vibrations to users to indicate when they should move right or left.

“What I’m interested in is making sure this technology exists to help everybody,” Wheatcroft says. “I think crossing the finish line I’m definitely going to be overcome with emotion. It’s probably going to be difficult to compute it at that point.”
