Last October Erika Hurt made headlines when police in Hope, Indiana, released a photo of her passed out behind the wheel of her car. She had overdosed on heroin and still had a syringe in her hand. But the worst part of all? Her 10-month-old son, Parker, was in the backseat crying.
Hurt was angry that Hope Town Marshal Matt Tallent released the image to bring attention to the opioid crisis initially, but that photo that went viral led to her getting sober. And now she’s actually thankful for it because it helped her turn her life around.
After attending a court-ordered drug treatment program, Hurt has been clean for a year now. She even wrote the police department a letter thanking them for sharing that powerful image that led to her getting off drugs.
