Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Principal Eric Buckley knew something was wrong when he got the urgent call over his two-way radio at the end of the school day. Deirianny Brea, a junior at the Peabody, Massachusetts school, was in cardiac arrest and Buckley had to put his defibrillator training to the test for the first time.
Everything worked as it was supposed to and the 16-year old is stable and recovering at the hospital. Her aunt, Cindy Caba, says her niece is alive and breathing today thanks to the heroic efforts of Principal Buckley and school staff.
The school system bought the defibrillators eight years ago after a similar situation with a student. Buckley says you hope you never have to use them, adding, “The good feeling is that she’ll be okay, that’s the biggest feeling.”
