High school football is everything in Winner, South Dakota. That’s why it was so special when football players from Winner High School came to escort elderly residents at a long-term care center to the homecoming parade.
Because of logistics and mobility issues, the residents didn’t think they’d get to see the parade. But the entire team came out and wheeled these seniors to a prime viewing spot on the parade route so they didn’t miss a thing. And they really enjoyed being escorted over by the “celebrities” of the football team.
"A lot of them wear Winner Warriors clothing on Fridays just because it’s football game day, so it was a really big deal for them,” explains Jody Engel, the center’s communications director. “In this town, those boys are kind of Gods. For them to come over, the residents were just ecstatic.”
