#GoodNews: Man Volunteers Cleaning Veterans’ Gravestones

They call Andrew Lumish “The Good Cemetarian” because he spends his time cleaning and scrubbing the gravestones of veterans, some that date all the way back to the Civil War. The Tampa, Florida man never served in the military himself, but he felt this work needed to be done to honor their service.

Lumish loves photography, and he was at a cemetery taking photos of historic graves when he started noticing how bad some of the gravestones looked. “Something bothered me,” he explains. “Their final resting places were total disasters.”

So he decided cleaning the neglected graves was an ideal way for him to honor veterans. He uses the same biological cleaning solution used at Arlington National Cemetery and has spent his weekends restoring over 500 monuments so far, and he’s not stopping anytime soon.
