Milwaukee, Wisconsin has a new project that’s purpose is to end chronic homelessness and it’s making good use of old parking meters. The repurposed meters are going to collect coin donations and Washington, D.C., Denver, Indianapolis and Detroit are some of the other cities starting similar initiatives.
There are seven meters being used to further the mission of Milwaukee County Housing Division’s Housing First Project, which recognizes housing as the first step toward being stable. Once stable living conditions are in place, wraparound services like rehabilitation, counseling, and job training and placement are utilized to further help.
"Milwaukee is going to end chronic homelessness faster than any municipality of our size,” explains Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. “And that's something to be proud of.”
