Doctor In Labor Helps Deliver Another Patient’s Baby

A Kentucky OB/GYN who was in the hospital getting ready to be induced to deliver her own baby jumped up and got into doctor mode when she heard another patient screaming in labor. Dr. Amanda Hess had actually seen the other woman, Leah Halliday-Johnson, at her practice a week earlier and was happy to help when the on-call doctor wasn’t there yet to deliver.

It was Halliday-Johnson’s fourth baby and without the doctor there, nurses told her not to push - which is easier said than done. So Hess left her own hospital room, put on another gown to cover up her rear end, and went to deliver the patient’s baby, whose umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. Just two quick pushes later, Halliday-Johnson’s healthy daughter was born.

“I had actually taken a call the day before, so I thought really that I was working up to the last minute,” Hess explains. “But this was literally ‘til the last second!”
