President Trump is announcing a ban on transgender military service. Trump tweeted this morning that the U.S. military must be "focused on decisive and overwhelming victory." He said the military "cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption" that transgender service in the military would entail. The President said he made the decision after consulting with U.S. generals and "military experts."
Critics of President Trump's announcement that he's banning transgender persons from military service are taking to social media. Opponents of the policy are retweeting a June 2016 post from President Trump in which he wrote, "Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs." Some members of the LGBT community who claim they supported Trump are tweeting that they feel "betrayed."
