Broadway Shutdown Will Be Extended Through May 2021

The suspension of Broadway performances in New York City has been extended through May 2021 due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin on the shutdown extension: "With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to re-opening as soon as conditions permit us to do so. We are working tirelessly with multiple partners on sustaining the industry once we raise our curtains again."

Broadway shows went dark on March 12th, at 5PM. At that time, 31 productions were running, including 8 new shows in previews. Additionally, 8 productions were in rehearsals preparing to open in the spring. The shutdown has rattled the theater industry due to the unprecedented circumstances of the current and ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. For further information, please visit Broadwayleague.com.

The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing have still committed to celebrating the Broadway productions that did open before the shutdown with the announcement of the virtual Tony Awards. Tony Nominations will be announced on October 15th with Broadway star James Monroe Iglehart serving as host. The Tony Award Nominations will be live on the official Tony Awards YouTube channel.
