Hear Mark Knopfler's Isolated Guitar From Dire Straits' "Sultans Of Swing"

No one can credibly argue that Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler isn't one of the classic rock's greatest figures.

Knopfler's generational songwriting, laid back baritone and unique finger-style electric guitar playing helped make hits of songs like "So Far Away," "Money for Nothing," "Romeo and Juliet" and "Sultans of Swing."

The master track of Knopfler's guitar from "Sultans" recently resurfaced on YouTube after being uploaded a few years ago. The track is instructive of Knopfler's mastery of his instrument and of his unique Classical/Flamenco-influenced playing style.

It's also pretty interesting hearing the bones of one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Dire Straits' signature songs. There's no mistaking what song it is or who is performing it, even without the benefit of the rest of the arrangement and the vocals.

Knopfler's playing is so clean and distinctive. If you listen closely, you can hear the edits between sections, but it appears the solo that ended up on the final recording was executed in a single take.
